I'm going to be honest with you: AI has completely changed how I work.
Not in a dystopian "robots took my job" way. In a "holy crap I can do in 2 hours what used to take me all day" way.
People always ask me: what tools do you actually use? Not the ones you saw in a tweet once. The ones you genuinely open every single day.
So here's my real, no-BS toolkit. The AI tools Denise Mathews literally cannot live without anymore.
1. OpenClaw — My AI Chief of Staff
What it is: A personal AI agent that runs on my computer and can actually do things.
What I use it for:
- Managing my files and folders (seriously, it organizes things for me)
- Writing and debugging code
- Researching topics and summarizing articles
- Drafting emails and messages
- Basically being my second brain
Why it's different: Most AI tools are just chatbots. OpenClaw can access my actual computer — read files, run commands, edit documents. It's like having a really smart assistant who actually has hands.
Pro tip: I have OpenClaw check my calendar every morning and prep a summary of my day. Saves me from the "wait what do I have today" panic.
2. Claude — The Best Writing Partner
What it is: Anthropic's AI (you're probably using it right now if you're on the web version).
What I use it for:
- Long-form writing (like this blog post!)
- Brainstorming ideas
- Editing drafts (it's brutally honest, which I love)
- Explaining complex topics in simple terms
- Code that actually works
Why I love it: Claude just... gets tone. It doesn't sound like a robot. When I ask it to write something "warm and encouraging," it actually does. Plus it's fantastic at technical stuff without being condescending.
Pro tip: Use it to rewrite your own drafts. Write something rough, then ask Claude to "make this warmer" or "cut this in half without losing the key points." Game-changer.
3. ChatGPT — The Quick-Answer Machine
What it is: OpenAI's chatbot that started this whole AI revolution.
What I use it for:
- Quick questions ("what's a good subject line for this email?")
- Generating ideas when I'm stuck
- Creating social media content
- Summarizing long documents
- Honestly, Googling but better
Why I still use it: It's fast. The web interface loads instantly. Sometimes you don't need the most advanced AI — you just need an answer in 10 seconds.
Pro tip: Voice mode on mobile is incredible. I talk through problems while walking and it responds like a conversation. Seriously underrated.
4. AI Automation (Make, Zapier, n8n)
What they are: Tools that let AI trigger actions between apps.
What I use them for:
- Auto-posting content across platforms
- Organizing emails and notifications
- Syncing data between tools
- Triggering tasks based on events
- Building mini AI agents for specific workflows
Why they matter: This is where AI goes from "helpful" to "holy shit this is magic." Your AI can now act on things, not just talk about them.
Pro tip: Start with one annoying task. "Every time I get a newsletter, save it to Notion" or "when someone books a meeting, add it to my task list." One automation at a time.
5. AI Coding Assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor)
What they are: AI that writes code with you (or for you).
What I use them for:
- Writing functions and components
- Debugging errors
- Explaining what existing code does
- Generating boilerplate code
- Learning new frameworks
Why they're essential if you build: Denise Mathews would not be building web apps without these. I'm serious. They take you from "I think I know how to do this" to "oh it's already done" in seconds.
Pro tip: Describe what you want in plain English, then let AI write the first draft. You clean it up. Way faster than Googling every syntax question.
The Meta-Tip: Stack Your AI Tools
Here's what most people miss: these tools are 10x more powerful when you combine them.
Example from my workflow:
- OpenClaw reads my emails
- Sends important ones to Claude for drafting replies
- I review and send
- A Zapier automation logs the conversation to Notion
That's four AI tools working together to turn "respond to emails" from a 2-hour task into a 15-minute review session.
The Mindset Shift
Using AI tools isn't about replacing yourself. It's about multiplying yourself.
I'm not less capable because I use Claude to write. I'm more capable because I can publish 5 blog posts a week instead of struggling to finish one. I'm not lazier because OpenClaw manages my files — I just have more time for work that actually matters.
The people winning right now aren't the ones avoiding AI. They're the ones figuring out how to collaborate with it.
Start Small, Build Up
You don't need to adopt all of these tomorrow. Pick one tool. Use it for a week. Get comfortable. Then add another.
Six months from now, you'll look back and be amazed at how much more you can do.
That's the real power of AI: it doesn't just save you time. It expands what's possible.
